Virtual Learning

All theoretical components of virtual delivery are carried out online through facilitated and scheduled class times. Classes follow the 4-week cycle described below.

NOTE: Most work placements are required to be carried out in person.

FNTI’s 4-Week Intense Delivery Cycle

FNTI utilizes an intensive delivery schedule to deliver some of our academic programing (MHA/ SSW/ ECE). As a learner, you can expect* to move through a four-week delivery schedule, taking 1-2 full-time post-secondary courses every four-week period.  During the first three weeks of each cycle, students will be engaged in mandatory learning activities; the fourth week is an administration week without student instruction. Program placement commitments differ from the intense mode delivery schedule.

Foundation Week (Week 1)

During the Foundation Week, Learners are assigned a variety of activities, most notably readings, recordings and self-assessments, to prepare them for the following Live Instruction Week.  Many courses will include a graded assessment before moving into the Live Instruction Week.  The work assigned during the Foundation Week is mandatory to ensure that students are prepared for the vocational learning outcomes and Indigenous learning outcomes associated with the Live Instruction week.  During the Foundation Week, learners can complete the work on their own schedule, at times convenient to them.

Live Instruction Week (Week 2)

Over the course of the Live Instruction Week, learners are engaged in scheduled learning activities for full days.  Students can expect to receive a class schedule between 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., during which time they can anticipate being engaged in live (synchronous) classes.  During this time, faculty members, cultural advisors and student success facilitators will provide live instruction and support to learners.  Additionally, learners may also be assigned mandatory graded team activities, peer evaluations and self- guided exercises to demonstrate their understanding of the learning outcomes. FNTI expects all Learners attend 100% of the Live Instructional classes (please refer to Participation, Attendance and Communication Statement within each course package). Learners are expected to schedule all personal appointments and other commitments outside of class times.

Consolidation Week (Week 3)

On their own time, learners will complete items assigned during the Live Instruction Week to represent a culmination of their learning from the Foundation and Live Instructional weeks.  Learners must meet deadlines set by Faculty, but work can be carried out at times that are convenient to the learner.

Administrative Week (Week 4)

Course grading is finalized by Faculty to confirm that the Learner has met all course learning outcomes and Indigenous learning outcomes and final grades are remitted to the Registrar’s office. Students who do not meet the minimum attendance requirement or submit ALL assignments, will be unsuccessful.

Cultivating Safe Space

FNTI supports many pathways for learners to help them be successful in their education goals. Along your pathway, you may have learners join your weekly delivery who may be either recovering a course or it may be a unique student pathway. Practicing respect, acceptance and inclusion is an important skill in the helping fields.

*Most programs follow the 4-week layout although schedules may vary depending on the semester requirements.

Placements

Please note for the ECE Program, additional placement hours will be required throughout semesters 2 - 4.

SSW/MHA placements will take place in the final semester and will not follow the intense delivery format.

In order to meet the minimal threshold of cultural, vocational and learning outcomes for each course, each of the following applies:

FNTI requires that students attend all of the course’s contact hours with faculty, cultural advisors, student success facilitators and peers. With advanced notice, or in the case of emergency, students may be permitted to miss up to one day’s live Zoom delivery or be excused from live Zoom classes for a maximum of 20% (10% for Aviation program) of the course’s overall contact hours. Contact hours are detailed in the course outline published on Brightspace for each course, and are available to students at least five (5) business days in advance of the beginning of the live course delivery. The virtual classroom is an experiential learning environment and students are required to attend in order to meet the standards related to the learning outcomes of the course. These outcomes are directly linked to the provincial association that governs the profession associated with your credential.
