FNTI & St. Lawrence College are developing a new program to train technicians for the wind industry in Ontario.
Graduates of the Wind Turbine Technician program will be able to commission, install, test, maintain and repair as well as analyze and troubleshoot the electrical circuits, equipment and systems and the mechanical systems associated with wind turbines. In addition, graduates will be able to participate in quality control and assurance programs and to apply communication, documentation, computer applica¬tions, information technology and teamwork skills to support the installation and operation of wind farms.
We believe that a solid background in safety, mechanical and electrical theory, as well as laboratory time to get practical exposure, is a great way to prepare graduates to find employment in the rapidly expanding wind energy industry.
This two-year program is designed in two stages. Semester one through three prepare the student in industrial safety, mechanical and electrical inspection and repair, hydraulics, programmable logic controllers and data transmission. The final semester concentrates on wind turbine history, maintenance, troubleshooting, construction and safety at heights. Students learn to plan their jobs, prepare reports, photograph damage, repair electrical and mechanical devices, lift heavy and awkward loads
and address all other aspects of wind turbine maintenance and installation.
