Traditional Practitioner

Description/Learning Appoaches

This program will further train graduates of Indigenous human services programs working in the helping field. The model, content and delivery of the program are Indigenous based.

Indigenous beliefs and principals will inform and be the content of the knowledge and skill development within each course. This program will facilitate those in the helping profession to acquire and apply traditional Indigenous knowledge and skill that focuses on wellness and psychosocial health.

This program is for those who wish to work or are already working within First Nations communities in the helping professions and wish to upgrade their healing skills. Individuals applying should have a minimum of three years of work-related experience in the human service field or its equivalent.

It is the goal of this program to build capacity for wellness for individuals, families and communities, thus improving the quality of life by addressing issues of self-worth and belongingness to self, family, community and nation. Working with those already in the field will facilitate the further development of individuals who know how to nourish the heart and spirit of life in the self, those they love and in those they work with as helpers.

Employment Opportunities

Learners in the Traditional Practitioner program will gain and enhance their skills and practical knowledge to allow them to work with and provide traditional healing services to First Nations individuals and communities in the Human Services fields.

Program Schedule

This one-year post-diploma program is delivered over three semesters in intensive-mode format. Learners will typically meet for five-day delivery sessions approximately every six weeks, on or near a First Nation that is centrally located and convenient to enrolled students.

Admission Criteria

This is a post-graduate program designed for graduates of an Indigenous human services program (SSW, BSW or equivalent) who also have three years of work-related experience in the field. However, learners who do not possess a post-secondary diploma may also apply under the Prior Learning Assessment process.

Additional Requirements

A portfolio and/or individual interview may be required prior to admission in the program. Please contact FNTI for further information.

Cost

Total tuition for the program is $1,600 per semester for a total of three semesters ($4,800). Course handouts and books are included in tuition fees. All travel and accommodation costs will be the responsibility of the learner or the sponsor.
