Description/Learning Approaches
The Office Administration Program is a college level certificate program offered in partnership with St. Lawrence College of Applied Arts and Technology. This program provides learning and academic accreditation to administrative support personnel employed with (or aspiring to be employed with) First Nations and Aboriginal organizations.
Consistent with all FNTI programs, learning opportunities in this program are culturally appropriate, current and responsive to adult learning.
A Program Management Committee is comprised of industry professionals who represent the college system and Aboriginal communities. The committee ensures that the program meets the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training's requirements and program standards; and that delivery and curriculum are culturally appropriate and relevant.
The program faculty includes FNTI staff members and external industry professionals. Collectively, the faculty group possesses a broad range of education and knowledge to enhance the learning experience of the students.
Students are registered with both FNTI and St. Lawrence College of Applied Arts and Technology. Students are invited to participate in the convocation ceremonies of both institutions.
Employment Opportunities
This program has been developed to respond to the needs of individuals who are employed as or interested in a career as an administrative assistant or junior manager with a First Nation or Aboriginal organization; as well as those interested in pursuing employment in the mainstream community. There is an increasing demand for knowledgeable and skilled individuals to provide support to community leaders, administrators and executive personnel of First Nations and other Aboriginal organizations, as greater management and responsibility over the economic, political and social affairs is assumed.
Program Schedule
The program is a full-time community based program and will take one academic year to complete.
Delivery sessions are four days in length and are held approximately every four to five weeks, from Wednesday to Saturday (classes end at noon on Saturdays) on or near a First Nation that is centrally located and convenient to enrolled students. Students will be taking two courses at a time per delivery session.
Admission Criteria
An Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is required for admission. However, applicants who do not possess an OSSD may apply as a mature student. Mature learner guidelines are determined by the partner institute. Please contact program personnel for details.
