Indigenous languages unveiled on First Nations Technical Institute website 

The First Nations Technical Institute (FNTI) understands the critical nature of language preservation. 

The year 2019 marks the United Nations’ International Year of Indigenous Languagesand according to the UN, the world’s Indigenous languages are under threat of disappearingIn fact, statistics show that one of the world’s Indigenous languages is dying every two weeks with many more at risk. 

“Saving our Indigenous languages is crucial to safeguarding traditional heritage and protecting cultural identity,” says Adam Hopkins, vice-presidentenrolment management and student services at FNTI. “Language is the foundation of culture and we believe in the shared responsibility of celebrating, embodying and preserving it for the well-being of communities everywhere.” 

FNTI has added Cree, Kanien'kéha and Anishnaabemowin languages to much of its website content. This effort highlights the significance of language revitalization for FNTI, its students, alumni, employees and partners. 

Preserving mother tongue education ensures the continuation and transmission of culture, customs and history from generation to generation. FNTI’s mission is to share unique educational experiences, rooted in indigegoy and Indigenous ways of knowing.  

A multi-language website is just one way that FNTI is delivering on an important promise,” said Hopkins.
