Indigenous Environmental Tech

Description/Learning Approaches

The Indigenous Environmental Technician program explores Indigenous knowledge and philosophies as they relate to the natural environment. The program is rooted in traditional knowledge and practices and exposes learners to cultural teachings, broadening their understandings about environmental issues facing First Nations communities.

Some courses in this program are specific to First Nations communities' needs and have been designed and developed by experts from First Nations communities within the Great Lakes region. Today many federal agencies incorporate traditional knowledge within their programs and documentation. It is now required by law that federal agencies involve First Nations people on any projects involving environmental research and/or monitoring.

Employment Opportunities

The Indigenous Environmental Technician program will provide individuals with the understanding and concepts of traditional knowledge enabling them to work within or in partnership with federal agencies, Environmental consulting firms, Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants, Government environmental monitoring agencies, research institutes or private companies and laboratories.

Program Schedule

This two year diploma program provides learners with the opportunity to acquire new skills and understandings about data analysis, water quality, plant and animal populations and a variety of environmental issues affecting First Nations communities.
