2011-2012 Schedule

The Public Administration and Governance Degree Program is a full-time university-level program offered in partnership with Ryerson University and provides learning and academic accreditation to First Nations Administrators.

It assists First Nations government administrators (and administrators of other Native organizations) to manage effectively and to gain control over their economic future. A Management Committee comprised of First Nations administrators and executives ensures that the program is culturally appropriate and current for First Nations governments.

There are 3 levels of learning:

Certificate - completion of eight courses
Advanced Certificate - completion of an additional eight courses
Degree - completion of an additional 17 courses if eligible for practicum

Studies may be continued or concluded at the completion of each level.

The program is delivered using a combination of intensive-mode and distance education.

Current delivery sessions are four days in length and are held in locations that are mutually agreeable to learners and faculty. Past locations have included Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Orillia, London, Tyendinaga, Six Nations, Ottawa, Timmins, Thunder Bay and Toronto. Learners complete 1 or 2 courses each academic semester. An academic semester consists of two 4-day sessions held 6-8 weeks apart. Readings and assignments are completed between sessions.
Learners receive certificates from FNTI and Ryerson University following the completion of each level. Following the completion of the final level of study, learners will be awarded their Bachelor of Arts - Public Administration & Governance degree.

Employment Opportunities

This university-accredited program is designed to meet the needs of current and future First Nations administrators and the needs of executive personnel of all Provincial and Federal Native organizations.

Program Schedule

Most learners take approximately 16 months to complete each of the first 2 levels of the program. It takes approximately 5 years to complete the full degree program. New program intakes begin in January, April or September each year, based on demand.

Admission Criteria

An Ontario Secondary School Honours Graduation Diploma (OSSHGD) or Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) is required for admission. However, applicants who do not possess either diploma may apply as mature students. Mature student guidelines allow admission to applicants if they are 21 years of age by December 31 of the year in which they will commence studies or have been away from formal education for at least 2 years.
