DESCRIPTION/LEARNING APPROACHES
The Aviation Diploma program, offered in partnership with Canadore College, is the only Indigenous, post-secondary program of its kind in Canada. The program provides an opportunity in a unique learning environment for Indigenous learners to become qualified Professional Pilots.
In addition to providing the means for learners to acquire a pilot licence, the program is designed to provide a more liberal and broad-based education while fulfilling industry expectations. The curriculum meets the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training requirements for post-secondary studies in addition to Transport Canada's regulations and standards for flight training.
A joint FNTI/Canadore Diploma is issued upon successful completion of the program.
Employment Opportunities
The employment opportunities for pilots, as with any other occupation, can and do change from time to time, depending on supply and demand. Graduates may look forward to securing employment as flight instructors, charter/bush pilots, en route to potentially becoming a corporate or airline pilot. Knowledge gained here can also be applied to other industry roles such as Flight Dispatcher, Air Traffic Control or Airport Management positions. Many of our graduates are enjoying aviation careers in a variety of capacities within the industry.
Campus
The campus is located on the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, two hours east of Toronto along the shores of the Bay of Quinte. Learners have the option of living on campus in our 23 unit single residence located directly on the aerodrome. A limited number of three bedroom family units are also available in a nearby subdivision.
Program Schedule
This full-time day study program consists of six semesters, presented over three calendar years. Semesters are scheduled to run from September through until the end of June. Annual program intakes occur in September.
Flight Training
Flight training is provided by qualified Flight Instructors, some of which are graduates of the program. All flight tests and examinations are administered by Transport Canada or its designee. A fleet of 8 well equipped and excellently maintained aircraft along with 2 approved Flight Training Devices are located and maintained on site.
