DESCRIPTION/LEARNING APPROACHES

The Diploma in Mohawk Language Program is a partnership between FNTI, Trent University and Tsi Tyonnheht Onkwawenna. It is offered through the Indigenous Studies department of Trent University. The academic portion is a two year, eight credit university level program that will provide learners with the knowledge and skills to gain fluency in Kanyen'keha while earning university credits.

The community portion of the program may involve a Practicum, working with a community organization, as well as being involved in various activities and initiatives offered by Tsi Tyonnheht Onkwawenna, (i.e. Language Awareness Week, Aboriginal Day Celebrations, etc.) Dedication and commitment to the revitalization of Kanyen'keha are required to be successful in the program.

The Diploma in Mohawk Language Program is delivered over two years at Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory. The root word method of language acquisition is used as the basis of the grammar portion of the program. The program is based on Kanyen'keha culture and will enhance knowledge of traditions while developing oral and written language proficiency. The Diploma is awarded upon successful completion of the program, at which time learners may apply for admission to the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) program at Trent University; credits earned in the Diploma program are transferable to the B.A.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

The Diploma is a two-year program open to Aboriginal students who have the equivalent of Ontario Grade 12 or qualify as mature students. Learners of Aboriginal ancestry are encouraged to enroll.

Acceptance and completion of Year One of the program does not automatically qualify students to continue on with Year Two. Learners must demonstrate their knowledge and ability in language usage in order to proceed to Year Two. This will be determined through completion of an assessment tool prior to being admitted to the second, more advanced Year 2.

Initial application to the program may be made to Tsi Tyonnheht Onkwawenna Language Circle

COST

Tuition fees are set by Trent University and subject to change on an annual basis.
